UHV Transmission Tower, Power Tower, Substation Lattice Steel Tower: Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Zinc Spraying and Coating Durability Analysis
Many power engineering professionals wonder which surface treatment process is the most durable for UHV grid facilities, including transmission tower, power tower and substation supporting lattice tower. The three mainstream anti-corrosion methods for steel tower are hot-dip galvanizing, zinc spraying and coating, with huge differences in service life and application scenarios. This video makes an intuitive comparison to help you select the optimal anti-corrosion solution.

All power steel towers operate outdoors for a long time, suffering from sun exposure, rain erosion, acid and alkali corrosion, and wind-sand abrasion. Especially UHV transmission lines covering complex terrains, the durability of the anti-corrosion layer directly affects the tower service life and grid operation safety. Coating is the most basic anti-corrosion process with simple construction and low cost. It is only suitable for indoor equipment and short-term projects. The paint film has poor adhesion, prone to peeling and cracking outdoors. It will rust severely within 3 to 5 years in harsh environments, with the lowest durability, and cannot be used for core UHV and substation towers.

Zinc spraying is a mature cathodic protection technology. The molten zinc layer sprayed on the tower surface provides better anti-corrosion performance than coating. It is flexible for partial repair and old tower renovation, widely used in conventional power grid maintenance, with a service life of 8 to 12 years. However, it has uneven zinc thickness and poor wear resistance. The zinc layer is easy to wear under long-term wind and rain scouring, so it is only applicable to medium-grade power projects, not UHV core facilities.

Hot-dip galvanizing is the industry-standard process for UHV transmission towers and substation core steel towers. The steel tower is integrally immersed in high-temperature molten zinc to form a dense zinc-iron alloy layer. The uniform and firm coating features excellent wear resistance, weather resistance and corrosion resistance, adapting to all extreme working conditions. Standard hot-dip galvanized lattice steel towers can serve stably outdoors for more than 25 years with low maintenance. The durability ranking is hot-dip galvanizing zinc spraying coating. For long-term outdoor UHV and substation steel towers, hot-dip galvanizing is the most reliable and cost-effective choice.
